Sergio Mantegazza (b. 1927) is the Swiss businessman who is the owner and Chairman of Globus, the multinational travel company which consists of more than 30 tourism and aviation businesses, serviced by more than 5,000 professionals.

Sergio was born in Lugano, Switzerland. A year after he was born, his father Antonio bought a rowing boat and began a business transporting commercial goods across Lake Lugano, later acquiring a fleet of 12 coaches to transport tourists around the Lake Lugano area. He called his new venture Globus Viaggi. Sergio became involved in the family business as it saw further expansion, by 1950 operating 33 coaches with overnight excursions to Venice, Rome, and the French Riviera. In 1961, the group launched Cosmos Holidays in the UK, selling budget European coach holidays and becoming so successful that air holiday packages to southern Europe were launched. By 1968 Cosmos air holidays became so popular that the company formed its own airline, Monarch Airlines.

From 1975, under Sergio’s leadership as President, Globus began expanding its brand markets beyond the UK, and introduced travellers to more countries than any other tour operator, with packages to Europe, Africa, Australia, the Americas, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific. Today, the travel group includes European river cruises and guided tours in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, and South Africa. Sergio also owns Luton Airport-based Monarch Airlines. Combined, the Globus travel brands carry nearly 500,000 passengers in a normal year, making the company the leading tour operators worldwide.

Today, Sergio ranks amongst the world’s richest people. As of 2014, and into his nineties, he was continuing to lead as President of Group Voyagers, Inc.
