Sir Moir Lockhead OBE (b. 1945) is the former Chief Executive of Britain’s largest bus operator, First Group, and was instrumental in managing the company’s growth throughout the UK and in North America.

Moir was born in County Durham and left school at 15, finding employment as an apprentice mechanic in a bus garage in Darlington. He then worked as a management trainee with Tarmac and followed a career in engineering until he joined Grampian Regional Transport in 1985 as General Manager, where he led a successful management buy-out of the company in 1989. The newly named GRT Bus Group expanded through the acquisition of six former nationalised bus companies in England and Scotland, and became a public limited company in 1994. The following year, FirstBus was formed through the merger of the Badgerline and GRT Bus Groups – with fleets in Wales now too – and Moir became Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive.

As founding Director and CEO, Moir saw the company grow to be the largest provider of rail and bus services in the UK and, with over 60,000 yellow school buses, the largest provider of school bus travel in the USA and Canada. From small beginnings in Aberdeen, the company now carries 4 million students per day and over 2.5 billion passengers a year, including the iconic Greyhound network in the USA and Canada. The company employs over 130,000 staff worldwide.

Moir was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 1996 for services to the bus industry. In 2008 he was awarded a Knighthood for services to transport, and was also named Director of the Year by the Institute of Directors Scotland.

He was honoured by the British Travel & Hospitality Hall of Fame in 2013.
