Peter Long
Chief Executive
TUI Travel PLC

Peter Long (b. 1952) is an English businessman and the Chief Executive of TUI Travel PLC. He played a key role in the merger that made TUI Travel one of the largest leisure travel groups in the world.

Born on Malta, as his father was serving in the Navy at the time, Peter later attended school in Fareham, Hampshire and went on to qualify as an accountant. He began his career working for electronics firm Vernitron as a cost accountant, and then worked for engineering firm BTR, becoming finance director. In 1984, Peter joined the International Leisure Group and rose to Chief Executive of the tourism division. He put this experience to use in 1991, setting up tour operator Sunworld with the backing of Spanish hotel partners, and in 1996 sold the business to the Thomas Cook Group. The same year, he was made Group Managing Director of First Choice Holidays PLC, becoming the Chief Executive in 1999.

In 2007, Peter was heavily involved in implementing the £2.5 billion merger between First Choice and German tour operator TUI Tourism, which brought together a number of famous brands including Thomson, Hayes & Jarvis, and Jetairfly. He joined the Board of TUI Travel PLC as Chief Executive, overseeing a range of businesses from sun and beach market-leaders, to more specialist adventure activities and online accommodation services. Market conditions proved tough following the merger, but Peter ensured growth in TUI Travel’s profits by offering more unique hotel experiences and activities to its customers.

In 2013, Peter was appointed President of UK-based charity, the Family Holiday Association, which provides short breaks for over 2,000 disadvantaged families. He has twice received the Odyssey Award from the Institute of Travel and Tourism.

Peter was honoured by the British Travel & Hospitality Hall of Fame in 2001.
