William Alun Cathcart (b. 1943) spent 14 years in executive positions in the transportation industry before joining Avis Europe in 1980, an association that would long continue for the next thirty plus years.
Alun was born in Ulster, and trained as an accountant before embarking on a career in the motor industry that saw him working for Hertz before he took up his position with Avis, where he became Chief Executive in 1983. He would hold this role for 16 years until 1999, and was appointed to the board of Avis Europe plc near the end of this tenure. He served as Interim Chief Executive from 2003–2004 and Chairman from 2004–2011, additionally serving as Chairman of the Nominations Committee and as a member of the Remuneration Committee.
Alun has occupied a wide range of other senior roles, including Independent Non-Executive Director of Justice Holdings Ltd., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Emap Ltd., Non-Executive Chairman of The Rank Group plc, Non-Executive Chairman of Avis Europe plc, and Chairman of Innovate Services Ltd. Most recently, he has served as Chairman of Palletways Group Ltd.
Alun was honoured by the Hall of Fame in 1998 when he was Chairman and Chief Executive of Avis Europe.
